2020 Water-Bath

Canning Workshops

Covid 19 Notice

By the time local produce is at its peak in August, we (Island County) ought to be in Phase 3 or 4. But who knows? So, I’ve decided to offer one-on-one home canning workshops any weekday or unscheduled Sunday in August for those who don’t want to be in a group workshop. And if you do want to be in a group workshop, I strongly suggest that you find 1 to 4 trusted friends and that you register together for a workshop. I’m happy to do a workshop for 2, 3, 4, or 5 friends together, and I won’t schedule strangers into your workshop if you book together, even if there are just two of you. We’ll have other precautions in place. Regular hand washing is a natural part of home canning, so we’re good there. We may also all be wearing masks and I may limit the number of people working in the kitchen vs watching. We’re also waiving our no refunds policy this year, so if you change your mind and don’t feel safe coming here (or we don’t feel safe offering it), the workshop can be cancelled by any of us with 48-hours notice and you’ll receive a full refund. Email me before July 15, and we’ll set something up that is safe and fun and works for you. Yay canning!

Water-Bath Canning: Berry Jams

Cost $70

Join Lori and friends in the Silly Dog Studios kitchen (aka, our home kitchen) to learn how to prepare and make beautiful, shelf-stable jars of berry jam. Several recipes will be discussed (blueberry, strawberry, raspberry) and at least one will be made. Likely using the amazing blueberries from Mutiny Bay Blueberries here on South Whidbey. The jam we make will be made with sugar, because sugar reliably preserves berries for a year or more combined with the canning process. We will also discuss techniques for using honey, fruit juice, and other techniques for making low- and no-sugar jams and the impact to shelf stability and flavor of these choices.

Lori has been home canning in Western Washington for 25 years as an adult and before that she canned with her mother and grandmothers in South Dakota.
