Here’s what’s coming up this summer at Silly Dog Studios:

Skagit Valley Camera Club talk

July 11, 2019 – Daniel will be returning to the Skagit Valley Camera Club to give a presentation on working in black and white photography. The focus of the talk will be about how to approach creating black and white images and how to work with a variety of subjects to make the best work possible.

The Water-Bath Home Canning series

Come to one or come to all! Join Lori and friends in the Silly Dog Studios kitchen (aka, our home kitchen) to learn how to prepare and make beautiful, shelf-stable jars of food for the coming year out of peak-season produce from local farms and/or from Silly Dog Studio’s own trees and garden. Each workshop is $65, which includes the cost of supplies, ingredients, and produce. You’ll leave class with recipes, best practices, safety tips, the confidence to try canning at home (or expand your canning horizons), friends who love to can, and six home-canned-by-you jars for you and your family. Workshops in this series:

Bread & Butter Pickles. July 18
Garlic Dill Pickles. July 20
Red Plum Jam. August 15 (If time, we may do some blueberry or blackberry jam too.)
Sweet Watermelon Pickles. August 16
Yummy Beet Pickles. September 5
Pickled Red Onions. September 6 (If time, we may pickle carrots too.)

Announcing The Mystic Routine our new self-paced workbook series coming this August!

Lori’s 10-workbook series will be rolling out later this summer. This “you pick which ones are right for you” series is about noticing when and where you’re naturally in touch with wonder and awe and making minor shifts/tweaks to existing routines to keep yourself in more regular touch with wonder and awe. The series helps people recognize, surface, and prioritize the mystic in everyday life. It may even help you recognize yourself and others as mystics–that’s what it did for Lori! The words “Holy shit, am I a mystic? Wait. What’s a mystic?” surfaced in workbook 7, Pulling Down Our Old Walls and Boundaries.

The first workbook, called Having Beautiful Conversations Every Damn Day, will be free. The other workbooks will be available for online purchase individually or as a whole at a 20% discount rate on the Silly Dog Studios website. The series is based on Lori’s popular 2018 book Unshaken Wonder and includes new essays plus new questions, invitations, and challenges to center fully on your own experiences of wonder and awe. We’ll send an announcement to our email list when this series is live on the website.

Summer artist/neighbor bonfires

We love to host outdoor gatherings around the fire during the summer, so we do! We gather just to hang out and get to know neighbors better, we gather to tackle burning questions that our artist friends bring, and we gather to remind ourselves that there are many, many good neighbors in the world today. These are pop-up style. If you’re a friend and you want one, we have one. And if you want to be reminded of them in advance, let us know!
Note: The past few dry summers have meant raging wildfires in the western US and Canada and terrible air quality here in August. We don’t host bonfires during these times.

Coming this fall…

Working in Black and White

October 5-6, 2019
Optional day October 4, 2019
$800 for three days / $700 for two days
In this two-day workshop, we’ll be completely focused on working with digital black and white images. We’ll cover converting to black and white as well as how to get the most out of the printer to create stunning black and white images.

There is an optional third day for the workshop that takes place out in the field. We will visit a variety of locations where we will discuss and learn about what you need to do behind the camera to make the best black and white images.
